A report from Amdocs subsidiary Actix revealed some very interesting information about the new crop of smartphones launched in 2013. Data uncovered by Actix revealed that smartphones launched last year consumed 40% more data than those handsets that were launched the prior year. And compared to the models launched in 2009, the new models used 7 times the data last year.Actix explains these statistics by saying that the drive to consume data, which was once led by the transition from feature phones to smartphones, is now being led by consumers switching from low-end smartphones to higher-end models. The research shows that each generation adds 40% more consumption of data by device.And even though 95% of network traffic comes from smartphones, the average device owner consumes twice the amount of data on his tablet than he consumes on his smartphone. Actix warns carriers to be prepared for an onslaught of low priced tablets just waiting to eat huge amounts of data.

On the top of the list of data consumers are owners of the Apple iPhone, who are consuming twice the amount of data as Android users do. Looking at particular devices, the top 3 data munching phones last year were the Apple iPhone 4, Apple iPhone 4s and the Apple iPhone 5.
